An activity I use to create a safe and emotionally supportive learning environment is a Cultural Sharing Circle. In this activity, students are invited to bring a story, song, or tradition from their own background and share it with the class. Each learner has the chance to speak while others listen respectfully. The teacher guides the discussion by asking simple questions and highlighting positive values such as respect, kindness, and cooperation.I would use this activity at the beginning of the school term, because it helps establish trust and belonging early on. It is also effective after breaks or holidays, when students return with new experiences to share. This activity supports learning by building social awareness and relationship skills. Students learn to appreciate diversity and see how different cultures contribute to the classroom community. Sharing personal traditions also strengthens self-awareness, as learners reflect on their identity and values. By listening to peers, they practice empathy and communication, which are essential for both academic and social success. For the teacher, the Cultural Sharing Circle is a practical classroom management tool. It sets clear expectations for respectful listening and turn-taking, which can carry over into other lessons. It also reduces conflict by creating a culture of inclusion students who feel their identity is valued are less likely to feel isolated. The activity gives the teacher insight into learners’ backgrounds and needs, which helps in planning lessons that connect to their interests. In summary, the Cultural Sharing Circle embeds the principles of safety, respect, and reflection into classroom practice. It creates a supportive environment where students feel proud of their identity,  and build stronger relationships. For the teacher, it provides a foundation for managing the classroom positively and tailoring learning to the diverse needs of students.   By starting the term with this activity, both learners and teachers can build a community that is inclusive, supportive, and ready to grow together.
