An activity I would use is called "daily check-in." This activity involves students sitting in a circle and sharing a brief response to a simple conversation, such as “How are you feeling today?" Students can choose to speak, pass, or respond non-verbally (e.g., thumbs up/down or emotion cards). So they don't have to feel any pressure.
I would use this activity at the beginning of the school day, especially during the first few weeks of school to build trust. It can also be used after breaks or during stressful times (e.g., before or after a test).
This activity helps students feel seen, heard, and valued. When students are emotionally supported, they are more likely to be interested in learning. It builds relationships among classmates, as they begin to understand each other’s feelings and experiences.
The daily check-in can reduce unnecessary stress because students feel connected to the classroom. It also lets the teacher know students’ emotional states and can change teaching style if needed. For example, if many students seem tired or stressed, the teacher can make a short activity to energize them. In the long term, this activity can improve respect, active listening, and a good classroom atmosphere.
