Activity: “Emotion Check-in and Group Sharing”
One activity I use to create a safe and emotionally supportive learning environment is an “Emotion Check-in” followed by a short group activity. At the beginning of the lesson, I draw simple emotion faces on the board, such as happy, sad, angry, tired, and excited. I ask students to choose one that shows how they feel by raising their hand or pointing to it. If they feel comfortable, they can also share the reason.
After that, I divide students into small groups and give them a simple task related to the lesson, such as discussing a question or solving a problem. I make sure each student has a role, like leader, writer, or speaker, so everyone can participate.
I usually use this activity at the beginning of the lesson to understand students’ feelings and help them get ready for learning.
This activity helps students learn because when they feel safe and understood, they can focus better and join the lesson more actively. The emotion check-in helps them express their feelings, while the group activity helps them practise communication, cooperation, and respect.
It also creates a supportive learning environment because students feel that their emotions are important. When they share and listen to each other, it builds trust and positive relationships in the classroom.
This activity also helps me manage the class better. When I know how students feel, I can adjust my lesson. For example, if many students feel tired, I can add a short energizing activity. Giving roles also helps students stay organized and reduces noise.
Overall, this activity is simple but very useful. It supports students’ learning, emotional well-being, and helps me manage the classroom more effectively.
