Supporting your learners
What strategies, if any, have you tried using to help your learners develop the five core competencies of Social Emotional Learning? What successes and challenges have you had with these strategies?
Well, I would not call it a strategies but it is a daily routine in my class over the year that might acthually help the students develop 5 core. First, set up a ground rules together with the students inside the classroom such as respectful to each others, listen when others talk, etc. This will be the very beginning of the class and it will actually help you and the students over the year. Second, I would put a flipchart at the end of the week for review and feedbacks or their emotional level that they can stick a note there. In this way, I can learn to be better as a teacher and for the students to know about each others as well. Third, whenever we have some tension inside the classroom due to overloaded homeworks or stresses, I would always played some games that might light up their moods. It always a good idea to walk around on the road without thinking anything while feeling the nature. This will actually lifted some unspoken thoughts and help them to focus inside the classroom again. Fourth, you can talk to the students individually after the class just so you can check up with them. Sometimes, the students stay quiet and they don't share anything so it better you approach them first and talk them individually. While doing that, make sure you don't weigh in a lot of your thoughts or share about yourself as a teacher, instead just ask simple questions that the students answer and just listen to whatever the students might say. This will actually help the mutual trust between you and the students.
Do you think you could use any of the lesson plans or SEL games from the International Rescue Committee resources in your teaching? If so, which ones, and why do you think they would work in your context?
Well, I think it will work because I was living in the refugee camp so.
