Activity 3. Experiences of exclusion and inclusion in education

I have read the two stories with keen interest and the stories have revealed a lot to me.

About Fredrick, I have learnt that lack of knowledge on how you can assist someone with a learning challenge could be disastrous. I have read that Fredrick went home and could not continue with school because at that time knowledge about special education was limited.

I have read the case of Senzo with interest.

In fact, reading the case study has revealed to me the importance of empowering teacher to handle learning challenges the children face.

The teacher because is experienced she was able to come up with all sorts of strategies to help the child.  This teacher introduced strategies like, Individual Support Plan (ISP), pair work instead of group work and most importantly allowed Senzo to work own time and his own pace. I have liked this story.

I read the case studies and agree that teachers need support in either their teacher training of short learning programmes to identify and support learning disabilities. They further need to be informed about support structures outside of the school gates

The two cases of Frederick and Senzo teach us that it is better late than never.

As teachers and care providers, it is ethical for us to follow up on our students, be concerned about their welfare, and help as much as possible either directly or linking them with a source of help.

Frederick's case shows that we can be destroyed without appropriate and timely knowledge. could have remained a destitute (may be) if destiny did not make his path to cross his helper.

With Senzo, the teacher did not give up on him. She was patient with him until he was able to catch up. That how the profession should be - helping the challenged student to find meaning in going to school., and not bullying a struggling student. A girl in my class - Form 2 - in my secondary school never returned to the school because she had problem with the Literature class. As soon the teacher entered the class, she would be the first person the teacher would ask the same question she could not answer in the last lesson. None of us in the class could trace her to any school, and we were not knowledgeable enough to look for her during the holidays as we were all in the boarding house during the school term.
