Gibbs (1988) expands Kolb's model into a six stage cycle which includes action planning:

  1. A person describes an experience they have had

  2. They note their feelings and thoughts about the experience

  3. They evaluate the experience

  4. They try to analyse and to make sense of the situation

  5. They come to a conclusion about what they have learned and what they could have done differently

  6. They create an action plan for future situations including changes they could make

Practice

  • For the rest of today try to apply Gibbs' model to a learning experience that you have, you could also try to apply it to your thinking or actions in more general terms.

  • Do you find it more useful than Kolb's model or less useful?

  • If you are a member of an on line group of some sort with other learners you might want to share your thoughts with the group and read what their thoughts are.
