Atkin's and Murphy's model of reflective thinking

Atkins and Murphy (1993) adapted Gibbs's model to encourage a deeper level of reflection:

  1. A person describes a situation

  2. They analyse their feelings and knowledge

  3. They evaluate the relevance of the knowledge

  4. They identify their learning

  5. Which leads to an awareness - which is necessary to cycle back to describing the situation

Three similar but different models

Each of the three approaches are iterative with the last stage taking you back to the first with a deeper level of understanding.

Practice

  • For the rest of today try to apply Atkin's and Murphy's model to a learning experience that you have, you could also try to apply it to your thinking or actions in more general terms.

  • Do you find it more useful than the previous two models or less useful?

  • Which of the three models do you think that you might use in future?

  • If you are a member of an on line group of some sort with other learners you might want to share your thoughts with the group and read what their thoughts are.
