Teachers play a vital role in creating safe spaces through education, especially in contexts of conflict or crisis. They can build trust by listening to learners, encouraging respect among peers, and making classrooms places of stability and hope.
In our migrant community, schools have some basic guidelines for protecting learners and teachers, such as rules against bullying and ensuring safe facilities, but these are often limited and not always fully enforced. I think the best way to advocate for safe schools is to raise awareness among parents, community leaders, and policymakers about the importance of education as protection, and to involve learners themselves in shaping safety practices.
More could be done by providing training for teachers on psychosocial support, strengthening school infrastructure, and building partnerships with local organizations to ensure schools remain safe spaces for everyone
