After reading about the five-step method for promoting a positive and safe learning environment, I realized that even though I did not know the exact terms before, I have already been practicing these steps in my classroom. At the beginning of each term, we sit together, get to know each other, and create our own classroom rules in addition to the school rules. These classroom rules are more specific and adjusted to the needs and sensitivities of my students, so everyone feels included and comfortable.
To build positive relationships, we regularly do teamwork activities and give each other positive feedback, usually once a month. For positive reinforcement, I praise students when they do well in exams, quizzes, group work, or individual projects. I also remind them how hard they have worked and tell them that I am proud of them. This helps them feel accepted and creates a positive atmosphere in the classroom.
I also apply consistent consequences when students do not complete their work after several reminders. However, this rarely happens because most students respond after one or two reminders. I always offer support by asking if they are having difficulties and which parts they do not understand. Sometimes, I assign stronger students to help those who are struggling, which also builds collaboration.
After practicing these strategies for a year, I strongly believe that my students are developing self-regulation skills. Over time, these behaviors become habits, and students learn to take more responsibility for their own learning.
