Sometime in my class, I noticed that my students were very quiet and seemed a bit heavy because of the news about the conflict happening around them. Instead of starting the lesson with difficult algebra, I decided to begin with a discussion activity. I used my usual “Feeling Share” routine and told them, “I know things are hard outside, but in this classroom, we are a team.”
At first, they looked surprised because they were expecting a normal, strict math lesson. But as we started sharing, the atmosphere slowly changed. They became more relaxed, and their energy came back. When we moved on to the math lesson, I saw that they were more focused and ready to learn. One student even told me that after sharing their feelings, their mind felt “lighter.”
From this experience, I realized that if I ignore students’ social and emotional needs, it is very hard for them to learn well. But when I take time to understand and support them, everything becomes easier. The class feels more positive, and managing the classroom is not as difficult because students feel safe and respected.
