Key principles of a supportive learning environment

I think these principles apply equally to all learning contexts, but teachers need to understand the situation and research it first in order to find solutions or address the issues. Sometimes, teachers can handle situations by meeting students individually, which can help them feel more confident and safer.

In my previous school, one of the students faced bullying because of his appearance. He felt sad and depressed.

I understood his situation and talked to him privately. I also tried to make him feel that I was someone he could trust. Eventually, he shared his problem with me, and I became someone he could express his feelings to and ask for advice on how to handle his situation.

This shows that understanding students’ situations and showing empathy can create a safe space for them.

Treating students equally and noticing their behaviors are some of the most important things for creating a supportive learning environment.
