This week helped me understand how important social and emotional learning (SEL) is in the classroom. Before, I mainly thought teaching was about delivering content, but now I see that students’ emotions, backgrounds, and life experiences strongly affect how they learn. Every student comes to class with different challenges from their family or community, and these can influence their focus, motivation, and behavior.

One key idea I learned is the importance of listening to students. Giving them opportunities to share their thoughts, feelings, hopes, and fears can make a big difference. It helps students feel valued and understood, which builds trust between the teacher and the students. I also realized that creating a safe and calm classroom environment is not just helpful, but necessary for effective learning, especially for students who may have experienced stress or trauma.

Another important takeaway is that teachers need to be flexible and responsive. Instead of using only one teaching method, we should adapt our approaches to meet students’ emotional and social needs. For example, allowing time for reflection or creating quiet spaces can support students who need extra care and attention.

I also found it inspiring that teachers around the world face many challenges, such as conflict or displacement, yet they continue to support their students. Their creativity and willingness to share ideas show how important collaboration is in education. Learning from other teachers’ experiences can help us improve our own teaching practices.

In the conclusion, after learning everything about teaching in this week, it changed my perspective on teaching. It reminded me that education is not only about academic success but also about supporting the whole child. As a future teacher, I will try to create a classroom environment where students feel safe, respected, and emotionally supported so they can learn more effectively.
