Daily Reflection
I would like to propose an activity called "Daily Reflection". It is a simple 10 minutes session where students sit in a circle and use a "talking object" (a small ball or any other cool object). Each student get a chance to share one "win" from yesterday or one thing that is making them feel a bit "blurry" or stressed today. If a student doesn't want to speak, they can just pass the object to the next person without any pressure at all. To be able to work this properly, teacher has to make the example with warmly tone and energetic atmosphere.
This activity is most effective when used at the very beginning of the school day. It acts as a bridge among the students and teacher. By doing it, we settle the energy of the room before we start any hard lessons. And I still believe that discussing or speaking with someone can reduce the stress that you hold. Sometimes, can only being listener also can reduce the stress.
This help students learn because it builds emotional intelligence and empathy. When a student hears that their peer is also struggling with a difficult math concept, they realize they aren't alone. Sometime, it even creates the hilarious atmosphere within the discussion. It creates a space because it shows that every voice matters and that "not being okay" is acceptable here. A student who feels seen and heard is much more likely to take risks in their learning. When the environment feels safe, the brain is more open to absorbing new information instead of being in lagging.
For the teacher, this is a powerful tool for managing the space. It allow me to scan the room and see who might need extra support that day. If I notice a student is unusually quiet during the Reflection, I know to check on them privately later. It also reduces acting out because students have already had a chance to express themselves. It turns the classroom from a group of individuals into a supportive networking where everyone looking out for each other.
