In a small seaside town, there lived an old witch by the name of Yamsetta.
En un pequeño pueblo costero, vivía una anciana bruja llamada Yamsetta.

Yamsetta's beloved companion was a cute, smiley, fat cat called Ginger.

The witch had poor eyesight, and one day, she accidentally poured flying powder onto her cat instead of flea powder.

Small white sparkles and a strange tingling sensation spread all over Ginger's body.

And all of a sudden, the surprised cat rose up into the air!

Ginger gave a loud, frightened meow and floated out the open window.

The witch ran out of her home and chased down the road after Ginger, but all too soon, Ginger floated over several rooftops and was out of sight.

At first, Ginger was terrified of flying, but after a bit, she got the hang of it and started to enjoy herself.

It was a hot, hazy day.

While Yamsetta ran around town yelling Ginger's name, all the neighbors boarded up their windows and doors, for they'd heard a hurricane was heading their way.

That evening, when Ginger tried to fly home, a terrible, wild storm tore through the town.

Ginger struggled with all her might against the wind, meowing desperately, trying to fly back home.

Helpless and unable to fight the storm, Ginger was carried away!

He was sitting on a high branch of the banana tree, sorrowfully holding the last leaf in his paw and contemplating whether to eat it all now or save half for tomorrow.

His belly growled.

After he ate this leaf, he'd have nothing to eat and would starve to death!

Just then, the storm hit his little island.

Cold winds wailed around him, shaking the trees.

And all of a sudden—a yowling orange thing hit him from the sky, knocking him off his branch.

Ginger hated water and shuddered in disgust as the rain hit her.

Paddy scampered through the forest and up a big, old tree.

Ginger followed him through a hole in the tree into a cozy little nest.

That night, while it stormed and rained outside, the two cuddled up close together to stay warm.

Ginger purred a calming lullaby purr, and Paddy fell asleep, smiling for the first time in ages.

While they were sleeping, magic white sparkles of flying powder that were stuck to Ginger's fur rubbed off onto Paddy.

When they awoke the next morning, the sky was blue, and the sun shone bright.

Meanwhile, desperate to find her cat, the witch pinned up reward posters far and wide, offering a large sum of money to the person who found her.

That evening, after hunting for Ginger all day long, the witch dragged her weary bones back home.

The man was a greedy robber who wanted to have the large reward he'd read about.

How to Use These New Spanish Words This Week:

Act Out the Story: Have the kids play the roles of the cat, the witch, and Paddy the panda. Encourage them to use Spanish words during their "dialogue."

Puppet Theater: Use a toy cat and a toy panda to reenact the flight. Use flour or salt as "flying powder" and make whooshing sounds for the tormenta (storm). Sprinkle in Spanish words like volar (to fly) as they move through the air.

The "Busca" Search Game: Use the Spanish command "¡Busca!" (Search!). Hide a toy and guide them using temperature words: frío (cold) if they are far away, cálido (warm) as they get closer, and caliente (hot) when they are right on top of it!

Friendship Circle: Have your child draw their best friends in a circle. Label each one as "Amiga [Name]" or "Amigo [Name]" to practice gender and friendship.

Spot the Word: Whenever you see a cat—in person or on a screen—point it out and say "gato" (male) or "gata" (female).

Touch the Word: Whenever you are near water (the sink, a pool, or a glass), touch it and say "¡Agua!"

Around the House: When you open or close the door, say: "Let's close the door. Vamos a cerrar la puerta."

At Lunchtime: Ask your child: "Do you want to eat? ¿Quieres comer?" When the meal is ready, announce: "Food is ready! ¡La comida está lista!"

Draw the Story: Direct a drawing session of the "flying cat" or "the happy cat cuddling the panda" using English and Spanish commands:

"Draw a flying cat. Dibuja una gata que vuela."

"Add dark storm clouds. Añade nubes de tormenta."

"Draw a little house beneath her. Dibuja una casita debajo de ella."

Coloring Guides: Use our printable coloring sheet (in the activities section) and guide them in both languages on which colors to use for the cat, trees, houses, ocean (mar), and the sky.

Example art instructions:

• Paint the ocean a dark blue.

Word Play: Ask funny questions about the plot:

"What does Paddy eat? ¿Hojas o hormigas?" (Leaves or ants?)

If they get it right, cheer! If they choose hormigas, laugh and talk about how itchy a tummy full of ants would be.

Word Puzzles: Use our free printable word search (in the activities section) to find the hidden Spanish words from the story.

The "Sinking Ship" (Barco/Mar/Agua): During bath time or in a water bin, use a toy boat (barco). Create a "storm" (tormenta) in the water and practice saying "¡Ayuda!" (Help!) as the boat tosses and turns in the sea (mar).

The Island Hop: Place cushions or towels on the floor as "islands" (islas). Have the children "fly" (volar) from island to island. If they touch the floor, they are in the agua!

The Leaf Match: Go outside and find a giant leaf and a tiny leaf. Point to the tiny one and say "Hoja minúscula." This is a great way to teach that adjectives like "tiny" come after the noun in Spanish.
