In a forest of golden leaves and velvet shadows, where the squirrels wore scarves and the wind smelled like cinnamon, there lived a girl named Mamira.

How to Use These New Spanish Words This Week:
The "Frío o Caliente" Scavenger Hunt: Hide a small toy. As your child gets closer, shout "¡Caliente, caliente!" (Hot!). If they move away, shout "¡Frío, frío!" (Cold!). If they are right on top of it, they found the "corazón" (heart) of the dragon!
The Word Search Puzzle: Print the free included word search puzzle game (in the activities section). Your child can hunt for the Spanish words they heard in the story after listening or reading it to reinforce the new words they learned. It's a fun, gentle way to practice vocabulary without stressful vocabulary drills or tests.
Coloring Activity: Print the coloring sheet from the activities section. This is a great way for your child to visualize the characters like the halcón and the mago while practicing their Spanish color names. You can give instructions on which colors to use or let them choose and name the colors as they go.
Bilingual Coloring Instructions:
- Paint the dragon gemstone blue. Pinta el dragón de azul gema.
- Make the chiles bright red. Colorea los chiles de rojo brillante.

The Hot & Cold Challenge: Use the Spanish words warm, hot, and cold throughout your daily routine.
For instance, during a shower, ask your child if the water feels frío (cold) or caliente (hot). At mealtime, check their food together: "Is your pasta warm/caliente or cold/frío?"
If reheating something from the fridge or a takeout, ask if they want you to warm up their meal so it is warm/caliente, or if they prefer to eat it cold/frío.
When taking out a cold item from the freezer ask if it's hot or cold and have them answer in Spanish.
(Only use the words for hot and cold in Spanish and English, keeping the rest of the conversation in English to maintain a natural flow and easy comprehension.)
"Find the Hot and Cold Things" Scavenger Hunt: Walk through the house and have your child point out items that are caliente, like the oven or a toaster (remind them to point, not touch!). Then hunt for frío items like the fridge, freezer, frozen food, or a window pane.
For warm items, don't forget to include cozy items like a bufanda (scarf), guantes (gloves), or blankets.
The person who finds the last item when no more can be spotted wins!
For a final round, play a word game where you list items that aren't in the room. Even in summer, you can still say "¡Nieve!" (Snow) for a frío point.
Craft & Create: Dragons of Fire and Ice
Cardboard Box Dragons: Use cardboard or thick paper to create Icekiss and a Fire Dragon. Draw two dragons and cut them out.
For Icekiss: Paint it azul and glue white algodón (cotton) or silver glitter for his frost breath.
For the Fire Dragon: Paint it rojo and glue orange tissue paper streamers coming out of the mouth for fuego.
Papier-Mâché Dragon: Create two dragons using paper mesh (strips of newspaper dipped in flour and water over a balloon). Once dry, paint one with "icy" cool colors and the other with "fiery" warm colors.
Playdough Sculptures: Make two batches of playdough: one with blue glitter and peppermint extract (for a frío smell) and one with red food coloring and cinnamon (for a caliente smell). Challenge your child to sculpt Icekiss and his favorite chiles or a fire dragon.
The Dragon Kite: Construct a simple diamond kite using light sticks and tissue paper. Cut out a long, jagged dragon tail and add "wings" to the sides. Use azul paper for an ice dragon that "flies through the frost."
The Twin Dragon Eggs:
Take two eggs (or wooden/plastic ones).
The Ice Dragon Egg: Paint it azul with white "frost" circles or silver glitter.
The Fire Dragon Egg: Paint it rojo with orange "zigzag" scales to look like flickering fuego.
The Game: Hide them! The child has to find the hielo egg before it "freezes" or the fuego egg before it "burns" the kitchen!
Science Experiments: The Magic of Water
Salt vs. Ice: Give your child two ice cubes. Sprinkle salt on one and leave the other plain. Watch how the salt "attacks" the ice, melting it faster.
Ice Spell: Fill three containers with water: one plain, one with lots of sugar, and one with salt. Put them in the freezer and check every 30 minutes. Discuss which one stays "liquid" longer and how the textures of the hielo look different.
Your child will see the plain water turn to ice first. Here is the "magic" behind it to explain to them.
The Science: Pure water molecules are like friends who want to hold hands to turn into ice. When you add sal (salt) or azúcar (sugar), those molecules get in the way! They act like little "party crashers" that prevent the water from holding hands. The salt is especially good at this, it lowers the freezing point, which is why we put salt on roads in the winter to melt the ice!
The "Beso de Hielo" Snowflake Forest: Grab some white paper and scissors. Fold them into triangles and snip away to create nieve (snow). Every time you unfold one, shout "¡Mira! Una nube de nieve!"
The Melting Heart (El Corazón de Hielo): Freeze a small "treasure" (like a plastic llave or a toy heart) inside a large block of ice.
Your child has to rescue the treasure using "Fire" tools. Give them warm water in a dropper and a bowl of sal (salt).
The Science: Explain that salt disrupts the ice's structure, lowering its freezing point and forcing it to melt even when it's surrounded by cold. It’s the only way to break Mordrick’s freezing spell!
Fire vs. Ice Balance: (Parent-led). Light a fósforo (match) or a candle and hold it an inch away from a hanging icicle or ice cube.
The Observation: Watch how the heat (energía) travels through the air to melt the ice. This represents the "balanced kiss" between ice dragons and fire dragons from the story—too much fuego and the ice disappears; too much hielo and the fire goes out!
The Frozen Bubble Kingdom: If it’s freezing outside (or using a very cold freezer shelf), blow a bubble using a standard wand.
Instead of popping, watch as tiny "ferns" and "feathers" of ice spread across the surface of the bubble until it becomes a delicate, frozen globe.
"¡Mira! Una burbuja de hielo." ("Look! An ice bubble.")
The Melting Mystery: Fill a balloon with water and freeze it solid. Once frozen, peel the balloon away. You now have a giant "Dragon Egg."
The Experiment: Sprinkle sal (salt) over the top and add drops of food coloring.
The salt creates deep, jagged tunnels and "caves" into the ice, and the color flows down into these tunnels like glowing lava.
The Science: The sal lowers the freezing point, drilling holes into the hielo while the rest remains solid.
