When the Cloudogool Fell From His Cloud
Cuando el Cloudogool Cayó de su Nube
By Lily Galili
Por Lily Galili
Up in the soft, puffy clouds, a group of young Cloudogools were having the time of their lives.
Cloudogools, in case you didn't know, are fluffy, white, cloud-like creatures with little round pink noses, shiny blue eyes, and big, happy smiles.
They're smaller than humans—even the adults—and the kids?
Tiny, squishy puffballs!
¡Pequeñas bolitas esponjosas!
The Cloudogools were playing tag, rolling across the cloud tops, and giggling as they chased each other.
But one Cloudogool got a bit too excited.
He dashed to the edge of the cloud, tripped, and...
WHOOOOOOSH!
With a cry, he tumbled right off the edge, spinning and flailing as he fell through the sky.
Down below, a little girl named Sally was sound asleep in her bed when...
THUMP!
Something landed on her roof.
Algo aterrizó en su techo.
"What was that?"
"¿Qué fue eso?"
Sally gasped, sitting up in bed.
Sally jadeó, sentándose en la cama.
Then came another thump, and this time, the strangest fluffy thing landed on her balcony.
Sally blinked, staring at the creature.
Sally parpadeó, mirando a la criatura.
It looked a bit dazed, rubbing its head and sniffling.
"What are you?"
"¿Qué eres?"
Sally asked, stepping closer.
preguntó Sally, acercándose.
She wasn't scared—it looked way too soft and pitiful to be scary.
No tenía miedo—parecía demasiado suave y lastimoso para dar miedo.
The Cloudogool sniffled again.
El Clouduggul se sonó de nuevo.
"I... I fell off my cloud," he said, his big blue eyes filling with tears.
Sally's mouth fell open.
La boca de Sally se abrió.
"You live on a cloud?"
"¿Vives en una nube?"
The Cloudogool nodded.
El Clouduggul asintió.
"We all do.
"Todos lo hacemos.
My mom told me never to go near the edge, but I didn't listen...
and now I'll never get back!"
¡y ahora nunca podré regresar!"
He burst into loud, hiccupping sobs.
Estalló en sollozos ruidosos e intermitentes.
"Don't cry!"
"¡No llores!"
Sally said quickly.
dijo Sally rápidamente.
"We'll figure something out."
"Encontraremos una solución."
Sally decided to help the Cloudogool get back to his cloud.
First, she tried climbing up to her roof and letting him stand on her shoulders.
But even with her brother joining in, they were nowhere near the clouds.
"We need to launch him," Sally's brother said, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
So they set up a giant slingshot between two trees in the garden.
They pulled it back as far as they could and launched the Cloudogool into the air.
WHOOSH!
But instead of reaching the clouds, he sailed over the fence and landed in the neighbor's yard—right in front of Burro, the pit bull.
GROWL!
¡GRRRR!
The Cloudogool screamed and scrambled back over the fence.
"That monster almost ate me!" he panted.
"¡Ese monstruo casi me come!" jadeó.
"That's just Burro," Sally said.
"Es solo Burro," dijo Sally.
"He's harmless.
"Es inofensivo.
Well... mostly."
Bueno... mayormente."
Next, they tried the trampoline.
Luego intentaron con la cama elástica.
The Cloudogool bounced as high as he could, but the clouds were still out of reach.
"We're going to need a taller building," Sally said.
Her brother agreed.
Su hermano estuvo de acuerdo.
"Let's take him to the tallest skyscraper in town!"
So off they went, holding the Cloudogool's fluffy hands as they led him through the noisy streets.
The Cloudogool looked around nervously.
El Cloudogool miraba alrededor nervioso.
The honking cars, rushing people, and towering buildings made his head spin.
"Stop right there!" a loud voice boomed.
"¡Alto ahí!" tronó una voz fuerte.
It was a police officer, pointing at the Cloudogool.
"What is that?" the officer demanded.
"¿Qué es eso?" exigió el oficial.
"He's a Cloudogool," Sally explained.
"Es un Cloudogool," explicó Sally.
"He fell from the sky."
"Cayó del cielo."
"Does he have any documents?"
"¿Tiene algún documento?"
the officer asked, frowning.
preguntó el oficial, frunciendo el ceño.
"Documents?" Sally's brother repeated.
"¿Documentos?" repitió el hermano de Sally.
"He's not a person.
"¡No es una persona.
He's a Cloudogool!"
Es un Cloudogool!"
"No documents? Then he's an illegal immigrant," the officer declared.
He pulled out a pair of tiny handcuffs and clamped them onto the Cloudogool's fluffy wrists.
"I'm taking him to the station."
"Lo llevaré a la comisaría."
"Wait!
"¡Espera!
You can't do that!"
¡No puedes hacer eso!"
Sally cried, chasing after him.
gritó Sally, persiguiéndolo.
But the officer marched off, dragging the poor, frightened Cloudogool behind him.
Locked in a cold, dark cell, the Cloudogool wept.
Sally and her brother knew they had to do something.
They rallied all the neighborhood kids, and soon a crowd was gathered outside the police station, chanting, "Release the Cloudogool!
Release the Cloudogool!"
¡Liberen al Cloudogool!"
News spread quickly.
La noticia se difundió rápidamente.
Reporters showed up, snapping pictures and interviewing Sally.
Los reporteros llegaron, tomando fotos y entrevistando a Sally.
Within hours, the protest grew.
En pocas horas, la protesta creció.
People held up signs and shouted, "Let him go!"
La gente sostenía carteles y gritaba: "¡Déjenlo ir!"
Meanwhile, up in the clouds, the Cloudogool's family was frantic.
His mother cried, and his friends stomped angrily on the cloud, causing thunder to rumble across the city.
Rain poured down in heavy sheets, flooding the streets.
The message was clear: "Release the Cloudogool!"
El mensaje fue claro: "¡Liberen al Cloudogool!"
After days of rain and flooding, the authorities gave in.
"Fine," they grumbled.
"Está bien," refunfuñaron.
"Take him back to his cloud!"
"¡Llévenlo de nuevo a su nube!"
The city hired a plane, and with Sally and her brother on board, they flew the Cloudogool high into the sky.
When they reached the fluffy clouds, the plane's door opened, and the Cloudogool took a deep breath.
"Goodbye, and thank you!"
"¡Adiós y gracias!"
he said, giving Sally a big, fluffy hug.
dijo, dándole a Sally un gran abrazo esponjoso.
Then, with a leap, he landed safely back on his cloud.
His family rushed to him, covering him in hugs and cloudy kisses.
The rain stopped, the clouds parted, and the sun shone brightly over the city.
From their rooftop, Sally and her brother waved at the clouds.
Up above, the Cloudogool waved back, his smile as bright as the sun.
"I'll never believe my science teacher again," Sally said with a laugh.
"Clouds aren't just vapor.
"Las nubes no son solo vapor.
They're magic!"
¡Son magia!"
And she was absolutely right.
Y tenía toda la razón.

How to Use These New Spanish Words This Week:
The "Arriba y Abajo" Game: Hold a toy or a piece of algodón (cotton). Move it quickly arriba (up) and abajo (down) while your child follows the movement. Then, have them do it! See how fast they can switch between arriba and abajo without getting mixed up.
Cloud Spotting (Buscando Cloudogools): Head outside or look out the window. Look for shapes in the nubes (clouds). If you see a shape, say: "¡Mira! Una cara en la nube." (Look! A face in the cloud). Remind them that these shapes are the magical homes of the Cloudogools and their shapeshifting friends!
The Cloudogool Bounce: Pretend to be a Cloudogool living on a fluffy white nube. If you have a trampoline, see how many saltos (jumps) they can do while counting in Spanish.
Alternative: Use a big, sturdy almohada (pillow) on the floor. Ask, "¿Qué tan alto puedes saltar?" (How high can you jump?). Keep jumping until you are both cansados (tired)!
Craft & Create: Build Your Own Cloudogool
The Cotton Cloudogool (El Cloudogool de Algodón):
The Body: Cut a cloud shape out of cardboard. Use glue to cover the whole thing in algodón blanco (white cotton wool).
The Arms: Use pieces of rope or toothpicks. Glue little tufts of algodón onto them to make them "cloud-arms" (brazos).
The Face: Cut ojos (eyes) and a boca (mouth) out of felt or painted cardboard and glue them onto the fluff!
The Kids' House: Cut a house shape out of a cardboard box. Cut out windows and a door. Paint the roof, window frames, door, and walls.
The Kids: Draw and cut out little paper niños (kids) to live inside the house, just like the characters in the story. You can glue a bit of cotton to the roof so the Cloudogool can find his friends!
The Word Search Puzzle: Find the hidden Spanish words from the sky! It’s a great way to practice recognizing the letters of your new vocabulary.
