The feed, besides covering the nutritional requirements for growth, and for reproduction, also brings nutrients that can be a very efficient tool to promote certain functionalities. The aquafeed industry is constantly seeking novel ingredients or additives that have a functional value, in particular during sensitive periods of the farming production cycle, such as fish transport or grading. Functional ingredients or additives target the promotion of animal welfare, immune status distress, and disease resistance,  lowering the environmental impact of feeds, and/or guaranteeing the quality of the fish and preserving its nutritional value to the consumer.

We hope to have highlighted that:

1. The use of functional aquafeeds needs to be adapted to the type of feed formulation used in farming;
2. Functional feeds are particularly important to help fish and shrimp to endure during stressful periods, and during sensitive life stages in the fish farming cycle;
3. Using functional aquafeeds can promote fish quality and safety, and thereby complying with consumer expectations.
