Reflection Activity

What Does Scaling Mean for Your Project?

Scaling is often assumed to mean growth, expansion, or increased visibility. However, citizen science projects frequently evolve in more complex ways. Some deepen participation, some influence institutions, while others intentionally remain locally grounded.

Take a few moments to reflect on your own initiative and consider the following questions:

  • When you hear the word scaling, what does it mean in the context of your project?

  • Are there expectations from funders, partners, or institutions that shape how you think about scaling?

  • Which forms of scaling feel desirable, realistic, or concerning?

  • Could remaining local or focused represent a responsible choice?

Write down three words that describe what responsible scaling would ideally look like for your initiative.
