Why Design Decisions Matter
View
Citizen science initiatives often prioritise immediate operational needs such as recruitment, data collection, and communication. However, the design choices made at early stages can significantly shape how adaptable and resilient a project becomes over time (Shirk et al., 2012).
Decisions related to governance structures, technological systems, communication practices, and partnerships can either enable flexibility or create constraints that become difficult to adjust later. Projects that do not consider adaptability early on may find themselves locked into approaches that limit future development.
This module invites practitioners to reflect on how projects might evolve over time and what conditions could help maintain core values, participation quality, and flexibility during periods of change.
