1 Chemistry and chemical manufacture – negative perceptions

There is no doubt chemistry, and its vast associated manufacturing industry is crucial for our existence – from food production to pharmaceuticals; and from modern materials to the cleaning products we find in our homes.

Chemistry and the chemical industry is often viewed in a poor light. But why?

Chemical manufacture is often perceived as being polluting and a major cause of damage to our environment. And indeed for many years that was the definitely the case (Figure 1).
