Why is MD working essential in MND

MND involves the decline of so many different functions which individually and combined have an impact on peoples social, clinical, psychological and quality of life outcomes. Addressing these requires the expertise of different professions, who also will bring their own experience of managing the disease to support complex decision making and the development of care plans. The nutritional management of people with MND is one such objective of the MND MDT. The whole MDT has the opportunity to screen for nutritional risks, identify changes in nutritional status and support people with MND to optimise their nutritional intake. One intervention is enteral nutrition, and multiple professions can be involved in identifying the need for enteral nutrition or support people with MND with their decision making. In the absence of coordinated monitoring, clinical decision making (within the MDT), and shared decision making involving people with MND and caregivers, decision making may be delayed, interventions may be delayed and this may impact on outcomes. For each area of care provision structures should be in place to allow MDT discussions and decision making to take place efficiently.
