Funding as a Structural Influence

View

Funding plays a significant role in shaping how citizen science initiatives operate and evolve (Wigboldus et al., 2016).

It affects staffing, timelines, reporting requirements, partnerships, governance structures, and how success is defined (Wigboldus et al., 2016). In many cases, short-term and fragmented funding environments create pressure for projects to continuously adapt in response to new opportunities.

While funding can enable growth and innovation, it can also introduce tensions (Moore et al., 2015). Projects may feel pressure to align with external priorities, simplify complex processes, or emphasise measurable outputs over less tangible forms of value.

Reflecting on funding as a structural influence may help practitioners consider how opportunities align with project purpose, participation, and long-term priorities.
