Introduction to Project Management

In the last 30+ years, the Institute has been actively engaged and involved in bringing to professionals world-class training and certification programmes offered by globally recognised project management certification organisations – International Project Management Association (IPMA®) and Project Management Institute (PMI®).

It is important to distinguish between project management education and professionally accredited project management certification. Accredited certification is a reflection of the application of competence, while education focuses more heavily on the acquisition of knowledge.

In this context, the focus of this course is to help you build-up a strong foundation of project management industry standards, principles, concepts, and tools to achieve better project results. This will help you establish the groundwork to pursue a certification accredited career path in the future.

International Project Management Association (IPMA®)

IPMAwas founded in 1965 and is the world’s first professional project management association. It is a Federation of 73 Member Associations from the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe. In the UK, the member body is the Association for Project Management, the APM.

IPMA plays a leading role in the development and promotion of the project management profession, providing standards and guidelines for the work of a wide range of project management talent through the IPMA Competence Baseline (IPMA ICB®).

The IPMA competence-based four-Level certification system for programme and project managers, starting at IPMA-Level D® is unique in the world and widely recognised for its quality.

IPMA Certification System

IPMA’s a competence-based approach considers the importance of acquiring knowledge, but also the need to develop skills and experience to apply that knowledge so that professionals can become competent at their project management practice.

Knowledge + Experience = Competence Project Management Institute (PMI®)

PMI is an American not-for-profit, for-purpose organisation founded in 1969. It is working in nearly every country around the world to advance careers, strengthen organisational success, and enable project professionals and changemakers with new skills and ways of working to maximise their impact.

PMI also published the A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK® Guide) which is a fundamental resource for effective project management in any industry.

The Best of Both Worlds

This course syllabus is based on both the PMBoK® Guide and the IPMA ICB®. That is taking the best of both worlds to create this course. This is the certification of project managers from the PMI. You will start at a Certified Associate project manager then you will become a PMP Project Management Professional. Above that programme management and portfolio management professional.
