Alberta OER COP

The province of Alberta in Canada suffered a blow to open education a year ago with the closing of eCampus Alberta, an organization that advocated for OER at post secondary institutions. However, a fledgling community of practice has recently emerged and the numbers are growing. At a recent COP summit at Mt. Royal College in Calgary, there were quite a few representatives from different schools, universities and colleges -- it was great to hear David Porter's keynote. We have initiated a digital newsletter that will hopefully launch this year -- it will keep people informed of OER policy, OER adoptions, student experiences with OER, OER discoveries etc. The biggest problem we have is funding. We would like to establish something similar to BCCampus or eCampus Ontario but it will likely be a few years down the road before we have this type of organization. In the meantime, NorQuest College, where I teach, will continue to forge ahead with partnerships with other institutions and encourage our faculty to adopt and maybe create OER. We have already seen a significant increase the use of OER images in our online courses A real inspiration to us is Maskwacis Cultural College, a two year indigenous learning centre located an hour south of Edmonton. They have been very active in developing OER that meet the needs of their unique learner population. In fact, they have translated the CC licenses into Cree. Here is an article that outlines some of their OER activities:
