I didn’t know what I didn’t know: from MOOCs to E-learning

I teach entry-level mathematics courses. There are many good quality MOOCs that teach entry-level mathematics as well. In fact I took a few of them and learned a great deal. I even managed to incorporate some of them into my own teaching. I didn't realize by taking these courses I'm actually doing E-learning. I was not a big fan of E-learning because I didn't believe students learn effectively under e-learning environment. But that's not the case when I think about my own experience with taking the MOOCs. I was able to retain and apply what I learned into my own teaching practice. So there is no reason for me to question students' ability of doing e-learning. I'm planning to include more e-learning materials in my future courses to give students more flexibility and autonomy for their own learning.

Good connection Xinli, yes, MOOCs are most definitely E-learning. Blended learning, where learners use some digital resources and spend some of their study time reviewing and practicing challenging concepts, mixed with rich discussion and active face-to-face learning can be the best of both worlds.
