A good MDT team is extremely important to support someone living with MND due to the the disease progression affecting so many different individual areas (eg. speech, swallow, mobility, psychological, nutrition, breathing + more). Each of these areas require a specialist health professional in that area to provide expertise and to then be able to work cohesively with the rest of the team.

As a Dietitian, having a strong and interconnected MDT is absolutely critical to be able to provide the best care possible to MDT clients. For example, one of my MND clients has recently experienced a rapid decline in his swallow and has been experiencing anxiety as a result of excess thick saliva. As his oral intake had also declined, we put a plan in place to supplement what he was unable to eat and drink orally via his PEG tube. Following his appointment, I was able to contact his Speech Pathologist who organised a swallow review, and flagged with his team about his excess saliva and the anxiety this caused where he commenced glycopyrrolate which eased his anxiety with eating and drinking. Without a good solid MDT the patient's care would have been hindered and no doubt their quality of life would have reduced should there have been unnecessary delays with follow ups.
