I think good MDT working and communication is very important
in the management of MND. All members of the MDT bring their own expertise and
skills required to manage the complex needs of patients with MND and also to
support their families/carers. It is important to have a holistic approach with
the aim to provide individual care that is coordinated and integrated.
Good and timely communication between professionals in the
MDT is very important to support the changing needs of patients with MND. A person’s
needs can change quickly and their need for a new assessment from the same
professional or new/other needs from other professionals previously not actively
involved in their care may be needed quickly to support the individual and
their carer/family as the condition progresses.
I have limited experience in working with people with MND and would like to
improve my knowledge to better support any patient with MND who is referred to
our service in the future. A patient I worked with in the past my part of the
MDT was primarily to do an assessment of the home environment and a full
assessment of their equipment needs including a specialist seating assessment.
Me and a colleague has also done moving and handling training for the carers in
the community.
