The importance of multidisciplinary working

Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is a progressive disease that affects the nerves also knowns as motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. MND is caused when messages from the motor neurons stop working properly and no longer reach the muscles causing the muscles to weaken, stiffen and waste. MND generally affects how people move, speak, eat, drink, behave, communicate and breathe. Research highlights that people with MND have multiple complex needs which requires input from specialist MND professionals across health, social care and 3rd sector services. It is imperative that we as professionals treat people with MND holistically by addressing not only their physical needs but also their social, emotional, psychological and spiritual needs.NICE Guidelines recommend that people with MND should receive coordinated care using a clinic-based specialist MND multidisciplinary team approach every two to three months. It is recommended that coordinated assessments should be carried out at the multidisciplinary team clinic to assess patient’s symptoms and needs and to ensure effective communication and coordination between all healthcare professionals, patients, and their carers as appropriate.

Within our locality, the MND clinic provides the attendees and their families access to several health care professionals including an Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Speech and Language Therapist, Dietician, Respiratory nurse, MND coordinator, neurologist and palliative care consultant. We currently hold an MND clinic once every 3 months, however sadly due to the increase numbers of MND patients, we are unable to always offer a clinic appointment to all patients every 3 months. At present we are trying to increase capacity by running a 2nd clinic on an alternative month to allow more patients to be seen within a clinic environment.
