Reflection - Dietitian from Australia

  • To me, person centred practise is about respecting and responding to the needs, values and preferences of patients to provide safe, high quality health care. I think that working as an MDT not only enhances patient outcomes through better coordination of care between the various professionals, but also acts as a vehicle to further ensure that person centred care is being delivered both in hospital and in the community.
  • Reflecting on my own practise, providing person centred care is of utmost importance - to make sure my patients feel supported and listened to. For example, providing information and advising on what a PEG is, how it works and the pros and cons of this to a newly diagnosed MND patient so that they can make an informed decision as to whether they wish to have a PEG in future - and then supporting them to be nourished and hydrated whichever decision they make.
