Reflection

The case studies showed really varied experiences of this condition. It is interesting to hear how common denial is, when being diagnosed, as a way to cope. I have had a few patients who are unable to accept or discuss the diagnosis but also many who are able to take a more proactive approach and are open to try interventions suggested and plan for their future.

Every one is individual and we support them in whatever way works for them however future planning allows them to be more in control and plan things they may want to do before they are no longer able. Having these open discussions can be very difficult with someone in denial.

Case study 2 spoke about finding out the reasons why a PEG was refused. I agreed with the plan to dig a little deeper in to the reasons, education is key.

I find it really interesting to see how different areas have different MDT approaches and there is something valuable to be learnt from good practices that I am hopeful to take away from this course.

I agree, when patients are in denial it can make assessments very difficult
