GLAM in Education

This was a very interesting module as I knew that some organizations shared their work but I did not realize how formalized it was or that it had its own acronym: GLAM.

I found myself wandering around the rabbit hole of images, mostly in awe of what is actually out there and available. I particularly enjoyed the Library and Archives Canada images as Canadian History and Culture have always fascinated me.

I found the following image and immediately thought I could use this in one of my education classes to have students reflect on their own teaching practice. What about the image is similar to the classrooms they experienced on their placements, and what is different? What sort of pedagogical practices do they observe in the image?

Children in classroom

What I find myself thinking about these images is who these children are!

We often have learners in our classes create documentations of learning in their child care programs but with privacy issues these days and despite having permissions, centers are reticent to let the students take pictures of children much less share them in a public forum like their higher ed classes.

I think it's possible students could create documentation from these open source images and no one would be the wiser. Although I do kind of feel for those children, did they realize their images would be splashed all over the place for free use? It reminds me of the pictures of children in residential schools in some ways.

Don't mean to be a downer, but today's hyper-vigillance around privacy makes one think deeply.
