2014 or .... forever ago

I began my journey into the wormhole that is OER back in Fall 2014. I was known as the professor that liked to try something new every semester. Piloting new materials meant "free stuff" for my students. A colleague of mine said, "hey Jen, there's this math workbook I'd like you to try from Scottsdale Community College and it's couple with free math software." I followed with, "sounds good to me, I'll give it a go." I literally jumped right in because that's how I learn and that's my teaching style. Now I always start with my story here, but it really started about 3 years before that when I piloted Khan Academy in my classroom through a grant opportunity. At the time, Khan was not OER, but free, so again, I was all over that. So really did I even begin my OER journey in 2011? I don't think so. OER is now currently the label that all educators call creating their own work. This is one of those labels that has a positive connotation to it.

My dream is to have the faculty at my community college label all their created work as OER using Creative Commons Licensing. I think it sends a positive, unified statement to our students, other faculty, administrators, and quite frankly, the world, that we are in this together and sharing is what we do!
