Open Education Goals
I've published a blog post on the activity for today. Here is an excerpt of the goals I set for myself based on the feedback from the survey.
One change you can make to your practice in the next week
This I find to be the hardest one as I am not doing much "teaching" right now, so thinking about my practice for the next week is a little difficult. That being said, I am going to treat it as what can I do in the next week to improve my practice for the coming year. Looking at the Recommendations and Guidelines to Increase the Level of Openness in your Teaching Work" document, one goal I can set for myself in the next week is to watch the video presenting an Introduction to Open Badges. This will help with the long-term goal of introducing badging of some sort in my courses.

Again, as I have no plans for actually teaching in the next month (this is summer after all!), I am looking for a goal that I can accomplish to help with improving my practice in the coming year. As I would like to use more OERs this coming year (and beyond), I think that will be my focus. There are a few suggestions, such as playing an online game titled "Finding and Using Open Educational Resources, browsing a long list of web sources of open content that might be useful in teaching, reading the UNESCO/COL Guidelines for Open Educational Resources in Higher Education. The goal I am setting for myself is to go read true stories of open resources reuse. This looks like some fascinating stories and videos about how individuals have been successful in using (and reusing) OERs. It might be just the thing I need as I do my own searching for OERs to include in my courses next year.

Finally, what goals can I set for the next year to improve myself as an open educator? The weak point in my assessment was in the Open Learning Design category. I feel this was a result of being a new teacher in higher ed and not having access to a vast network of other educators in my field. They are definitely out there, however, I have not made the contacts with other Faculties of Education in Ontario to see what their instructors are doing in the same, or similar, courses that I am teaching. For me, that is the key to becoming a strong collaborative, open educator. So though it is not a recommendation from the OEF document, I would like to set a goal of contacting at least one other faculty of education in Ontario and talk to whoever is teaching their Curriculum and Instructor Science and Technology courses to see if there would be an interest in collaborating on either some courses or some OERs for our courses.
