the contradiction between oer and copywrite

Hi,

once again late to the party, but felt I should contribute. I have so enjoyed this Mooc, it was unfortunate timing for me that I couldn't keep up with the group.

I recently created a new course for my ECE Program. It was actually taking two courses and creating a bit of a hybrid, now to be offered online or as a blended model depending on which way the instructor chooses to go. I tried to insert oer as much as possible, yet the textbook for the two original courses had been ordered and I was therefore under pressure to include readings from the textbook.

In the readings, I understood that if there are a combination of both knowledge rights management and oer, it's a contradiction and oer loses it's value. I would agree with that message.

In my situation, learners are not reading. The cost for books is outrageous which creates an apathy towards purchasing them. The habit is formed quickly, if I don't read, surely the instructor will fill in the blanks with slide decks that are rich with information. As an instructor, I don't test students, rather I incorporate journaling and documentation of learning as evaluation criteria, so the reading becomes secondary to the learners as to how they demonstrate their knowledge. I know as a learner myself, the importance of reading for the content, it is becoming more and more challenging to "get" the students to read regardless of what kind of resource is provided.
