my reflection

Return to the MDT address book you created in week 2 and think about a person living with MND you have supported in practice. You may also wish to reflect on one of the patient experiences explored during week 3.

Consider the following questions:

  • What are the most useful pieces of information you would need from different MDT members to carry out your role effectively?

I feel first and foremost is who to contact and how to contact them. This sounds very simple, but as i have recently started in this role, i found that patients have started to ask me questions about their clinical care, however since i am a research nurse, i need to direct them to the most suitable professional who will help provide them with the right support. i need to work within my scope of practice which is informing the patients about clinical trials, and anything clinical is best provided by the MND team such as the specialist nurses, OT, physios, dietician, speech and language team.

  • What information would you want other professionals to understand from your own professional perspective?

Since starting in the role, i have realised that the clinical team often get asked questions about research, and they feel the same way i do - in that they want to direct these questions towards me in order to ensure that the patients are given the most up to date information. Therefore i have recently made a flyer and newsletter - highlighting the key points and my contact details which they can hand out to patients.

In the discussion board below:

  • state your professional role

senior MND research nurse

  • choose three or four professions from the MDT or wider network

MND consultant

MND specialist nurse

Dietician

  • outline the information you would need from those professionals to support your practice effectively

contact details,

hours of working ? shift pattern

how to best contact them

when do they meet for MDTs

What day o the week do they attend clinic to see patients

how often do the review patients or follow up

  • reflect on what information colleagues may need from you in return.

contact details,

hours of working ? shift pattern

how to best contact me

when do I meet for MDTs

What day of the week am i available to see patients

how often do i review patients or follow up

how to refer patient to me who wish to take part in studes

what studies do we have open
