Sourcing materials: Principle 4 Engaging with materials

Principle 4: Art for Action allows young people to engage meaningfully with materials

Preparation will be needed to provide the resources for the art-based approach(es) chosen.

To demonstrate integrity with the aim to connect communities and heritages with climate change, thought will be needed as to the resources which the participants could use in the making sessions. This would include thinking about what is local and sustainable.

At this point you will also need to consider whether there are materials that might be the focus of the call for action eg. plastics, batteries, vehicles, clothes, water. With these materials you may want to consider how the young people will be able to really consider the materials at the centre of their activism, what connection they have to their local area, the young people's lives and / or the settings in which the events are happening.

Reflection: Outline your ideas for gathering materials

  • What materials might be needed for creating the artefacts?
  • Where do the materials come from? are they recyclable?
  • What materials may be the focus for the young people's art creations?
  • How are these materials connected to the area and the young people's lives?

On the next page you will consider Art for Action principle 5 and implications for your planning.
