Sourcing inspiration: Principle 5 Connecting with climate change
Principle 5: Art for Action allows young people and their communities to make meaningful connections between their lives, local environment, global concerns and climate change.
Before engaging with the project, we would like the young people to self-assess how they feel about climate change and how to address it. We have provided a confidence board activity (Appendix 3) which the young people can use before and after the project.
In addition, for participants to get started on their artivism they are likely to need some inspiration for them to respond to. This project may be part of a larger learning initiative about climate change or it may be stand alone. If the latter, it may need more significant framing at the introductory stages to get the young people to consider;
- How climate change is impacting or is likely to impact on their local community and environment?
- What adaptations / mitigations are already taking place or are planned?
- Who in the community is involved in making decisions about responding to climate change?
- How local heritages, languages and wisdom interact with changes to the climate?
As the introduction to these topics will depend significantly on the context, age and location of the group, you will need to consider what is appropriate.
Reflection: What can be used to stimulate ideas for your participants?
- How will you set up the confidence board activity in your setting for before and after the making phases? How will you capture the outcomes?
- What resources / sources could the young people engage with to aid their understanding about the interactions between people, environment and the climate crisis in your contexts?
- What local industries, environmental features, materials, or community issues could be used as inspiration and how will the young people make meaningful connections with these?
On the next page you will consider Art for Action principle 6 and implications for your planning.
