When I teach writing to my first year students, we learn about all the different rhetorical modes. Instead of teaching these is a compartmentalized approach, I can have the students work in topic groups and create their own wiki pages that demonstrate each rhetorical mode on a single topic. This can be a capstone project that also allows them to demonstrate their grammatical and mechanical skills, research and documentation skills, and their document design skills.
This may not be a brand new idea, but it's new to me. I am so excited about trying this out!
