Summary

One of the key aspects of In-the-Picture is its flexibility. There is no definitive way to make a first person narrative observation or to take or share the photographs of objects of interest. Similarly, as practitioners have found, the situations in which the approach can be used are wide ranging and open- ended. However within this flexibility the four perspectives represent important foundations for developing a clearer understanding of experiences from the child’s perspective. In-the-Picture involves some form of: first person narrative observation; recording the child’s focus of interest; sharing these records with the child; and reflective discussion with those their family and supporters. Combining the four aspects of the approach enhances our listening to and engagement with the complexities and subtleties of young children’s perspectives.
