Teresa provides a very honest reflection on how she has developed some aspects of In-the-Picture. For her elements of doing written first person narrative observations were practically challenging and so she decided to adapt them as a running commentary. As a practitioner she often decides to use the approach when she needs to take a step back and re-engage with the child’s perspective. She has also found that these observations support her discussions with parents during the home visit and prompted parents to participate themselves. This highlights the significance of the spontaneity and simplicity of the approach. It is not intended to be the preserve of experts or professionals but a way for all those involved to develop a shared understanding of the child’s perspective. Teresa’s plan to introduce In-the-Picture to the parent/child groups that she is going to run similarly emphasises its flexibility and adaptability, characteristics which you will be thinking about in the next section.
