5.2b – Heating the home

Many students are aware of, and often very concerned, with issues linked to the environment and global heating. It is useful to have some statistics to put the headline targets in perspective:

  • About 95% of UK homes used central heating in 2020. Of all UK households, 87% of households use gas for heating, and 7% use electricity. The remainder use oil, solid fuel or other forms.
  • There is more information in this link: https://www.statista.com/statistics/426988/united-kingdom-uk-heating-methods/
  • As there is a great urgency to reduce worldwide carbon emissions, the UK will ban gas boilers being installed in newly built homes from 2025 and ban the sale of new gas boilers after 2035. Low carbon options for heating include heat pumps and electrical heating.
  • In the UK, electricity is an increasingly low-carbon option for heating. In 2020, 59% of our electricity was generated using low-carbon options (52% in 2019). Of this, 43% was from renewables (wind, solar, hydro and other), and 16% from nuclear.
