11.3 Reflective Break and Comprehension Check

View

Reflective Break

Write down all of the ways that you assess learning in your classroom. How many of them take into account the impact of groupwork on individual student performance? Now that you have completed this unit, what new assessment strategies are you interested in trying?

Sample Response

I give end of chapter, end of unit, and end of semester tests to check student comprehension of the material and use of skills. I give grades on a 0-100 point scale to each individual. I also do a lot of informal assessment with comprehension checks and monitoring student groupwork, but I don’t assign grades for those. I would like to try the Combined Grades Bonus Points strategies. They give students full credit for their individual work and additional credit for participating in productive group work.

Comprehension Check

Without looking back at the text, what is the difference between formative and summative learning? Which assessment strategies are a good match with each?
