7.5 Fantasy Positive Interdependence
Sometimes learning becomes more enjoyable when students assume a new identity. For example, when playing sports, students might fantasize about being their favorite sports star, or when playing internet games, students might take on the identity of a superhero. Fantasy positive interdependence uses this concept. Group members pretend to be in another time, e.g., the year 2040, or place, e.g., Brazil, or to be different people, e.g., tourists from Hungary or social influencers, or even non-human animals, e.g., talking fishes.
Role plays are one way of promoting Fantasy Positive Interdependence. For instance, group members can pretend to be visitors from another planet whose purpose (goal) is to learn useful ideas by observing what happens on Earth. When they return to their own planet, they will make a report on their findings. Another idea for promoting Fantasy Positive Interdependence is for students to pretend that they are the organisms in an ecosystem, such as the trees, fungi, grasses, insects, birds, oxygen, solar energy, and carbon dioxide in a forest. The idea is that being in this fantasy world may encourage group members to work together more closely.
