7.4 Resource Positive Interdependence

View

One type of positive interdependence that is highlighted in the CL technique Jigsaw (please see the unit on CL techniques) is Resource Positive Interdependence. Resource positive interdependence means that each group member has a unique resource that they must share in order for the group to succeed. These resources can be of two types: information and material. Information resources are the type we see in Jigsaw. Each group member has unique information and must share that information for the group to succeed. This information can be provided to the students by the teacher or the course materials. Information can also be provided by the students, either from knowledge they already have, such as when students interview each other about their attitudes toward frogs, or from information they obtain by doing research.

The other type of resources are materials. For instance:

  • In doing an experiment in science class, different group members might have different pieces of apparatus needed to conduct the experiment.
  • When making a graphic organizer, each student can use a different color marker, with the goal of having all colors represented in the graphic organizer.

Please remember that Resource positive interdependence is only when each group member has a resource that no one else in their group has.
