Reflective Break

Choose just one of the manifestations of the spirit of cooperative learning - positive interdependence, abundance, wanting to be more, freudenfreude, or kampung spirit. How do you try to bring that spirit info your life and your teaching.

Sample Response

I choose freudenfreude. It’s easy to envy other people who seem to be doing better than me. Maybe they are people who do better than me in ping pong, swimming, or lifting weights. Or, maybe they are teachers whose students seem to do better than mine or whose students seem to like them more than my students seem to like me. Instead of envying them and feeling schadenfreude, I try to be happy for them, to encourage them to do even better, and to learn from their success.

Comprehension Check

Without referring back to the text, list as many of the types of the spirit of CL as you can remember. Give an example of each, either from the text or one of your own. After you have finished, if you are working alone, go back to the text and see if you missed or misunderstood anything. If you are working with others, switch answers with a partner and try to add to or clarify anything they wrote.
