3.3 Being More Rather Than Having More

View

Should we measure success by the objects we have accumulated? For example, do we estimate our personal worth by how large our homes are, or how much clothing, furniture, and jewellery we have? Accumulating objects uses a lot of the Earth’s resources. Instead of having more possessions, we can strive to be more ourselves. For example, we can be more by learning (e.g., learning to play the drums, to garden, or to do computer coding). Being more can also mean being more kind or patient.

In education, having more can include higher grades, more praise from teachers, more awards, and more gold medals. Being more can include being a better groupmate and classmate, being someone whom others trust, respect, and like. CL provides opportunities for students to be more in many valuable ways.
