    • Introduction

      Welcome to In-the-Picture - Developing perspectives upon a very young disabled child’s experience. This course has been funded by the National Portage Association using a grant from the Department for Education. It consists of 8 sections which have been designed to take about one hour to study. In each section as well as reading there are two activities. These involve videos of practitioners talking about using In-the-Picture and its four perspectives, as well as examples from research. The activities also provide opportunities to practice this observational approach. Although we would encourage you to complete the course as an individual you may find that having another colleague working through the training at the same time is beneficial. Discussing your thoughts about the ideas and activities in the course with a colleague can add to your learning about In-the-Picture.

      You will find it helpful to keep a notebook while you are working your way through the course in order to record your responses and reflections on these activities. People who have completed the course found that writing the section number or activity number against the relevant notes helped them when they wanted to refer back.

      You can keep track of the topics that you have completed in each section by ticking the circle next to every heading in the menu listing. If you want to receive a 'Statement of Participation' for the course when you have finished it then you need to complete the quiz at the end of every section. There is no pass mark for a quiz, you only have to attempt it and then check your answers .  The 'Statement of Participation' will be emailed to you at the address that you provided when you enrolled. 

      Now you can begin the course by working through Section 1 which will provide you with an overview of In-the-Picture. Click on the Course Content tab above to go to Section 1. 

      PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO A TECHNICAL PROBLEM WHICH IS BEING INVESTIGATED THE ACTIVITY PAGES ARE SHOWING THE SAME CONTENT TWICE.

    It's surprising how, many young or fresh out of university teachers, apply this sort of approach without knowing the name of the strategy. I have used it partially without knowing what the approach was and found it to be very effective for the most part.

    I found this course very interesting. I am in my first year with Portage and think this would be a good for me to use in some visits.
    I think it will help when we are dealing with more difficult parents and the parents who find it harder to engage.
