2.1 Counting and part-whole strategies: Stages of Thinking

This document provides an overview of the stages of thinking that pupils move through from Early* to Third* and predominately relates to addition and subtraction.

It has been cross-referenced to the Maths Recovery stages and the stages used in the New Zealand Numeracy Project so that staff can move between resources more easily.

Read the document to familiarise yourself with the stages.  As you progress through this assessment training you should become increasingly more familiar with the stages and identifying which stage a pupil is at.

The first side relates to the COUNTING STRATEGIES i.e. pupils use strategies involving counting by ones to solve problems.  This may require counting from one (both with or without concrete materials) or pupils may be able to count on or back.

An overview of the counting strategies typically exhibited at each stage including links to Maths Recovery and New Zealand Maths.

The second side relates to the PART-WHOLE STRATEGIES i.e. pupils now realise that numbers are nested within numbers and there are different ways to break them up and manipulate them to help us solve problems more efficiently.

An overview of the part-whole strategies typically exhibited at each stage including links to Maths Recovery and New Zealand Maths.
