Welcome to the first of a series of online learning modules relating to the effective implementation of the diagnostic assessments.
This online learning module is currently being piloted by a series of schools and individuals who have expressed interest.
If you are on the pilot for this course, ensure you complete:
The pre-training questionnaire before starting.
The post-training questionnaire at the end of Part 1. This includes your results and analysis from the moderation activity. Details of how to send a copy of your assessment recording sheet anonymously are provided in the post-training questionnaire.
The link for the questionnaires should be available through your Head Teacher (if you are doing this as a whole school) or you may have been sent this personally. It is also in the Pre-Course Questionnaire Section within the course contents.
We hope you enjoy the course and find it useful.
Course learning outcomes
By the end of this course you should have a better understanding of:
The stages of thinking that pupils move through in addition and subtraction (including their connection with Early Level through to the beginning of Third Level).
How to deliver the addition and subtraction diagnostic assessment.
How to record pupils' thinking during the diagnostic assessment.
How to score the diagnostic assessment including:
An overall level judgement
A second optional scoring system to measure smaller increments of progress if required
Identifying next steps based on the assessments.
Analysing the results of the assessments.
It is also hoped that staff will gain a better understanding of the range of strategies that pupils use to solve addition and subtraction problems.

For schools completing this as part of whole school training. You may wish to use Section 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 as a 'Gap Task' before the next training session. This will allow staff time to process the information, become more familiar with the assessments and have tried some out themselves.

Course was very easy to follow and complete. Most challenging part was finding where I had left off each time!
