3.5.5 Activity: Exploring CC Mixter

Study time: 15 minutes

So far, you’ve looked at how images and text-based resources can be adapted and remixed. Music can also be openly licensed, adapted and remixed. The community music site CC Mixter is a great place to explore Creative Commons-licensed remixes and samples that can be used freely (for non-commercial purposes) and remixed.

  1. Visit the music site CC Mixter (https://ccmixter.org/). Note that at the bottom of the page it says that the text and images on the site are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 4.0 International License.
  2. Now, look at the Global Music Community section on the same page and note that most of the music available there is licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0. This means that you can use this music for editing, as a background for a podcast, or for other purposes. However, you cannot sell the work in which you use this music.
  3. Spend a little time exploring the site and listening to some of the music.
